Seishin (correct heart/mind) is the essence of “nin”(忍) and is the correct heart and mind. The elements of “nin” (忍) are covert activity, information gathering, disguise, and surveillance. Without first having a correct heart, it is impossible to take advantage of strategy.
Koshi said that not cultivating the proper heart will cause confusion and distress. The meaning of “correct heart” is the adherence to virtue, righteousness, loyalty, and sincerity. Without maintaining virtue, righteousness, loyalty, and sincerity, it will be impossible to have intrepid spirit.

Military affairs are a major importance to the state. It is the way of life and death, existence and cessation. It is an important matter and should not treat it lightly.
Therefore, we shall first specify the details, clarify the five matters and seven stratagems, and grasp the essence of a person’s heart and draw up the correct strategy. The five matters are, (1) wisdom, (2) virtue, (3) sincerity, (4) valor, and (5) austerity. These are not different from the three efficacies of (1) heaven, (2) earth and (3) man.
Even if you attack a huge army with mere one thousand soldiers, in one hundred battles you can be victorious one hundred times, and you shall not be in the risk of being defeated.
