How To Use The Kodachi (Short Sword) vs the Katana | Japanese Swordsmanship Training Techniques
In this video, I teach how to use the kodachi (short sword) vs. the katana (long sword) in combat. This is a crucial lesson for all that is training in kenjutsu/iaijutsu as there are many times the samurai/ninja would lose a weapon in battle and have to rely on their side arm.

Togakure-ryu Ninja Biken: Hiryu-no-Ken | Ninjutsu Sword Fighting Training Techniques (Ninjato)
In this video, I teach an old ninjato/shinobigatana technique from the Togakure-ryu school of Ninpo Taijutsu. This kata is from the Ninja Biken section called “Hiryu no Ken”, which means Flying Dragon Sword. I briefly go over the classical kata and explain some of the principals. However, the purpose of this training session was to extracted some of the principals of the traditional kata and work various training drills to develop stronger skills with the ninjato/shinobi-gatana/ninja sword.

Ninja-Iai: Iaijutsu Quick Draw Training Drills with Kodachi (Ninjato) | Ninjutsu, Bujutsu, Kobujutsu
In this video I demonstrate a basic iai (iaido) sword drawing training drill to help develop the skills needed to be proficient in iaijutsu. In this drill I am using a kodachi (ninjato) because the ryuha that we are training in has a strong focus on the use of the short sword.

The training (keiko) of Iai/iaido/iaijutsu is to be able to respond quickly to a unexpected attack efficiently. This is a skill-set that is highly needed in today’s world of self-defense, as these same skills can be equally used in the use of concealed carry with edged weapons for self-defense / self-protection.

“Outside of Japan, people think Bushido is synonymous with harakiri. Actually, the meaning of Bushido is to achieve something in this world and then to be able to throw away this body and accept death. But this concept is very easily misunderstood. It’s really quite different from just going out and dying. If you fail to achieve something and say “Oh, I must kill myself” it’s not a very productive way of thinking. Bushido rejects that irresponsible way of thinking. There is also in Bushido the concept of continuing to live even though you may have to live in shame. If there is a way to right the wrong you’ve done, then you should do so. This is the real Bushido.”

Shihan (Teaching Master) of Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū
Risuke Otake of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu (one of the oldest koryu bujutsu, dating back to the middle Muromachi period) said in an interview that the popular idea of Bushido is over-romantic and misleading.
