A Real Master…

Anshu Christa Jacobson

“When things are going the way that you want them to go, it is easy to be calm and happy about your life and portray a positive image. But this is not true test of happiness or character. The true test of happiness and character comes from the moments that you stay calm, maintain a positive spirit and balanced character within the face of danger, adversity and ridicule. If you can maintain your character in these moments, this is the test of happiness and the honest expression of a real master.”

Kuroro Kagi – Kura no Kagi

Soke Christa Jacobson

Kuroro Kagi / Kura no Kagi
 .
——- Images (Top Left) me with various Ninki (shinobi tools) in the Budo Ryu Hombu Dojo.  (Bottom Left) close up of the ninki that I am sitting by; taken from my personal collection. (Top Right)  This image was taken from the Ninpiden written in 1560 by Hattori Hanzo of the Kuroro Kagi with a description of its use.  (Bottom Right) Is a picture of various Kuroro Kagi that is displayed in the  Iga Ninja Museum; Japan.  ——-
 .
This tool is used to easily break in or simply enter in a storehouse or residence which is locked up tight.  With this Ninki (shinobi tool) you can easily unlatch or unlock the door.  However, there are various sizes of kuroro kagi and historically the kuroro kagi (also called kura no kagi) is nothing but a simple key, not a lock breaker.  This is why the Ninpiden says that you need to take many of these in different sizes on your mission so that you can simply open the door instead of breaking the lock.
 .
However; if you do not know the type of door, take a middle size tool, which should fit most locks and in fact, if you can get a smaller kuroro kagi in the lock, even if it does not fit exactly, with the simple shift in your body leverage, you can easily break the lock with the kuroro-kagi.  Any budoka highly trained in taijutsu will recognize this shift if they were in this position.
 .
The tool is made of iron, and the handle is made of cypress wood. Attach a string to the handle and carry it against your hip.
 .
The measurements of the kuroro kagi as written in the Ninpiden:
 .
* The iron L-shape it should be 1 Shaku, 2 Sun in total length. (approx: 36cm)
* It should be 2 Sun in width.  (approx: 6cm)
* 1 Bu and a half in thickness.  (approx: 4.55mm)
* The handle should be 5 Sun long.  (approx: 15 cm)
* The chord is 6 Sun 8 Bu long. (approx: 20.4cm)
 .

Fear (恐) within Budo, Bujutsu, Ninpo, Ninjutsu, Samuria and Shinobi.

Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson

Fear (恐)

“When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.” – Buddha

Fear is a wonderful lesson in the natural elements of IN & YO
(Ying & Yang in Chinese).

Fear is a distressing negative sensation induced by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. In short, fear is the ability to recognize danger leading to an urge to confront it or flee from it (also known as the fight-or-flight response) but in extreme cases of fear (terror) a freeze or paralysis response is possible.

For this reason alone you have to understand yourself and how to read the sanshin (mind, body & spirit) within. If you understand how to look inside yourself and understand why you are feeling a specific emotional response, this gives you a greater chance for survival as now you are listening to your inner feelings, and using an educated strategy based on experience to back up the emotional gut feeling by physical action. I preach this type of strategy daily at the Budo Ryu Hombu Dojo. This is how warriors have been training for centuries; finding ways to be able to connect the mind and the body together in balance.

Remember a warrior acts; only fools react.

Next time you feel something such as fear, Fear (恐)

“When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.” – Buddha

Fear is a wonderful lesson in the natural elements of IN & YO

Remember a warrior acts; only fools react.

Next time you feel something such as fear, anxiety, depression or sadness, do not just react to this feeling, as you are not in balance and more than likely do something that you might regret. Act to the emotion correctly, by using your mind in balance with the inner feeling. Developing the strategy needed to follow out the objective. This can be anything from a natural feeling of fear and love, to a daily goal all the way to military procedure.

This is why Budo is in everything that we do, it is who we are, and this is what separates us from the ones that simply read books on martial arts and think that they know; action from wisdom.

There is an old saying “He who knows others is wise; He who knows himself is enlightened.” – Lao Tzu; 604 BC, Zhou Dynasty

I hope that you all enjoyed today’s lesson.

Take care, be safe and good luck in your Journey of Budo.

Making Your Movements Stick – Bujutsu – Taijutsu

Soke Tomo-ryu; Anshu Christa Jacobson

Photo Taken: 10.29.2011
Budo Ryu; Hombu Dojo
武道流忍術道場

— MAKING YOUR MOVEMENTS STICK —
Taken from the Hyoho Shiju ni kajo
Written by Miyamoto Musashi; 宮本 武蔵 1584 –1645

“You and your opponent attack each other. At the moment when he blocks your sword, you close in on him and make your sword stick to his. You must glue your sword to his as though it were impossible to make it come unstuck, but without putting too much force into it. In making your movements stick, you can never be too calm. You must distinguish between sticking and becoming entangled. Sticking is strong, becoming entangled is weak.”

“making your movements stick ” (nebari o kakuru) the description here is a more simple version than the one written in the Gorin no sho (book of water) written 4 years later.

It is also needs to be understood that we do not carry the sword today, so our body is the sword or the weapon that we would use, so to understand this in the modern day, is to take these principals and apply them to you Taijutsu training. I hope that you all enjoyed today’s lesson.
