I’ve had a normal day.
I was motivated & inspired before it started and I am even more motivated & inspired as the day goes on.

To all the people that have loved & supported me all of these years, thank you for the love and support! I will ALWAYS continue the teachings of Budo Ryu Ninjutsu.

Shinobi Mumon no Ikkan – The Gateless Gate

The Gateless Gate

Soke Tomo-ryu; Anshu Christa Jacobson

“The great way has no gate;
There are a thousand different roads.
If you pass through this barrier once,
You will walk independently in the universe.”

The Gateless Gate (無門關)

The gateless gate is regarded as the greatest book of zen ever complied. It is a collection of 48 Chan (Zen) koans compiled in the early 13th century by the Chinese Zen master Wumen Hui-k’ai (無門慧開; 1183–1260).

This book was so profound even during the Sengoku Jidai (戦国時代); Samurai (侍)and Shinobi (忍び) families were reading these words as an aid towards enlightenment. In the Shoninki written by Natori Masatake of the Kishu-ryu school of Ninjutsu he writes:

“One of the most important things for you to do is always know everything you can of every place or province that is possible to know. When you are in that said province, be sure to read the feeling of the local people and do what is necessary according to the situation. If your mind is in total accordance with the “way” and understands reasoning and logic perfectly, than you can pass through the mumon no ikkan (The Gateless Gate; 無門關) “checkpoint”. This is a mental place that is barrier without a gateway that exist inside your mind. You will be able to pass through this mental stage because you will have a clear mind and reasonable thinking due to your training.” — Natori Masatake; Kishu-ryu; Shoninki

Understanding — Don’t just live your life day by day, live your life in a more positive realm of preparing today for tomorrow. I tell my students this all of the time,… “prepare for the worst, hope for the best”. The key word here is “prepare”.

With proper preparation, planning and strategy you can achieve anything that you set your mind on. This is more than just combat and martial techniques, this includes life as well.

Live for today, prepare for tomorrow!

“The Guerrilla fights the war of the flea, and his military enemy suffers the dogs disadvantages: too much to defend; too small, ubiquitous and agile an enemy to come to grips with. Anshu Christa Jacobson – Purpose of the Martial Arts

Soke Christa Jacobson

Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson

PURPOSE OF THE MARTIAL ARTS
(Taken from the upcoming book from the Budo Ryu Kai)

To understand the purpose of the martial arts training we have to understand the goal towards training; Self-Enlightenment, Self-Empowerment, Self-Defense and Self- Protection of oneself and loved ones.

I was once told of an old story of these two master swords man who were closer than brothers. They both mastered the way of the sword, and prepared to start their journey of Musha Shugyo (武者修行). They were going to be separate for many years. So they met one day on the opposite side of this creek, and they agreed that they would re-unite at the same place, at the same date, twelve years later.

Twelve years later, at that date they found that the rain and the course of nature had changed that creek to a large raging water stream so there is no way that they can meet at the exact same place. As one of the samurai determined to live up to his vow and to show his incredible level of skill that he amassed over the twelve years. He took a running jump and leaped over the deadly current of the rushing water, safely on the other side. The other samurai walked upstream and hired a boatman to get row him across safely to meet his close friend.

The skills that one man spent 12 years of training and refining was duplicated effortlessly with a few pennies. Similarly if your goal is only to “win” or “kill”, than we can just buy a gun rather than investing years of training. This is why students of Budo need to understand that Budo is not just about winning. Next we need to understand that winning is more than just defeating your enemy, it is about perfecting yourself – your personal character – as well as your skills as a martial artist.

In Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu (英信流居合術); one of the seven warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu, there is a saying: Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari (Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard) physical skills alone no matter how highly developed are not enough. There is always someone more skillful or someone with a dirty trick that will leave you unprepared. But attitude is better than aptitude in actual combat.

Without having a strong warrior spirit, courage and determination a high level of skill is useless. So the purpose of training in Budo is to develop the mind and spirit of a warrior and such a strength of character that it wins a battle before it begins. This takes years of training to do. These skills also lead to the ability to rid your self of and not respond to hate, slander, anger, fear, selfishness and jealousy as they are counter productive and self-destructive. Simply put frustration is the first sign of mental weakness. Those that get so frustrated that they have to say and do negative things are clearly mentally weak, and as a warrior and a practitioner of budo, you should not concern yourself with this action as this will also lead you off of true path of Budo.

“Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari”
(Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard)

Anshu Christa Jacobson – Reflect Your Inner Self

Anshu Christa Jacobson

REFLECT YOUR INNER SELF.

Everyone of us has a essence, a soul and a spirit that resides within.
This spirit is what drives us to be who we are.

The physical realm changes as we change through life, when you are a little one, you look as such, when you become a teenager, to adult, you take the form of where you are mentally as well as spiritually. This is so that you can show the world who you are on the inside, and express with the others around you.

Some of us do many things to change our outward image to reflect who we are, such as change the color of our hair, get tattoo’s and body piercings, etc, etc. This list goes on and on, fact is everyone does these and changes the outward image to show to world or reflect the inner spirit.

When your body matches your mind and your mind matches the spirit, you have taken the sanshin (mind, body and spirit) and made them one, only at this time can you have complete happiness, control of oneself, a high level of self-esteem and awareness which leads to a positive self-expression.

*******
“Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and importance, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.”
– Margaret Thatcher

*******

In life we learn that nothing stays the same, that everything changes. As you change, as you age, you need to maintain that same level of balance in your life, letting your physical form match that of how you feel with the mental and emotional forms to maintain that balance within.

NO BODY — “fits in” — hell; we are all misfits in some realm or another, but the facts are that we are all human, we all have feelings and we all strive to have balance and happiness in our lives. For this reason alone, no one person on the face of this earth should be judged by their gender, race or religion as all of these things are just emotional outlets to help maintain the balance and happiness that we all seek.

I know today that you probably wanted me to talk about the martial arts and fighting techniques, zen and mental clarity. And although that is usually what I talk about, if you take all of that one step further we are all doing these arts for the same reason, to be happy.

Does it really matter what martial art someone does as long as it works? And when I say works I do not mean hurting another person, I mean bring the practitioner happiness and outlets towards self expression as a person.

It should not matter, martial arts is just the vehicle that you use to get you from “A” to “B” and “B” is the destination. As long as you find happiness doing the arts, that is what is of importance, not what “style” that you practice, because the facts we are all different people with different feelings, no one art can truly relate this to every person who practices the martial arts,..this is why I have always said the person is always more important than the art, without the person, the martial arts do not exist.

Whatever martial art you choose to do, do so with complete balance of the Sanshin. Whoever you choose to be, do so with the complete balance of mind, body and spirit. You have the right to be happy, and only you can make yourself achieve that happiness. I hope you all enjoyed the lesson today.

BUDO RYU – NINPO GOSHINTAIJUTSU – SELF DEFENSE WORKSHOP 2011

Here in this video promo is of the Ninpo Goshintaijutsu Workshop 2011 DVD that will be released by the Budo Ryu -School of War. In this event we looked at the raw reality of self defense. There are so many schools that do not focus on this, they only focus on strictly kata, or understanding of. In this school of martial training we train to defend ourselves, family, village, and ryu by all means necessary.

Ninjutsu is the art of survival, we train so that we can survive and live our lives the way that we want to live our lives to make us and our loved ones happy.

I hope that you all enjoy the video,

Anshu Christa Jacobson – Budo Ryu – Actions Speak Louder Words

I have never responded to a forum attack or a youtube / video attack in anyway, I let them talk and I simply go about my business promoting good ethics and morals to my students. I have nothing to defend, the Budo Ryu is a school of traditional martial arts that trains and teaches 7 warrior traditions.

— SORRY BUT I AM NOT SO INSECURE THAT I HAVE TO TALK TO A WEBCAM AND TRASH OTHERS ONLINE SO THAT IN MY HEAD I CAN FEEL THAT PEOPLE WILL LIKE ME, AND LIKE WHAT I DO —

I have to hold a position that reflects the dignity of the school. If I am going to tell my students that you should not fight unless you have to, that if the bully is talking than just walk the other way. If I am going to say this to my students, than that is the action that I will reflect from the school too.

Fighting is always the last answer, only fight if you have too, and these kids are talking to a computer, they are not here on the mats, they are talking to a webcam all over the world. I spend my time training, teaching and dedicating myself to the study of the arts. That is all. None of this online hate and slander has anything to do with being a good person or helping myself, my family, my friends, the school or my students in anyway at all.

I hope that you all enjoy the video and understand why I do not take part, the Budo Ryu is a professional school of marital arts and will conduct itself as such.
