Old Samurai Story: The Two Swordsman | Martial Arts Philosophy | Ninjutsu, Ninpo, Bujutsu, Budo

In this video, I tell an old story of the two swordsman, who went on a warrior journey (musha shugyo) to develop their swords skills to better understand “The Way” of the sword. This is an old lesson to help students question their purpose of training in the martial arts.

This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

Ninjutsu Technique: Yari-Yose (Spear Catcher) | Historical Koryu Ninja Martial Arts Training (Ninpo)

In this video, I teach a technique from the Tomo-ryu called: “Yari-Yose” (Spear Catcher).  This is a technique that is passed down in the Tomo-ryu school of Shinobijutsu (戸猛流忍術) to teach how to utilize the sageo (下げ緒) on the scabbard, as a means to disarm a spearman, finish him, then evade.

.

The Bansenshukai (萬川集海) written in 1676, also has a technique called “yari-yose”.  Even though this technique has the same name, same objective and purpose; there are slight differences between the technique “yari-yose” in the Bansenshukai, and the “yari-yose” that is taught in the Tom-ryu.

.

In the Bansenshukai it says:

“The yariyose or the ‘spear catcher’ – tie the end of the sageo cord onto your short sword. Draw the sword out fully and hold it in your right hand and the scabbard in your left hand, with the rope hanging between. When a spear is stabbed at you, catch it and wrap the sageo cord around the spear and take the enemy’s weapon.”

– Fujubayashi Yasutake – Bansenshukai (1676)

.

  • (1)  The Bansenshukai says to tie the rope to your sword while the other end is tied to the saya (scabbard). In the Tomo-ryu, it says to hold one end of the saego in your hand, with the other end tied to the scabbard.
  • (2) The Bansenshukai says that the sword should be drawn, with the sageo hanging between the sword and the saya. In the Tomo-ryu the sword is not drawn, it stays in the scabbard, till after you disarm the spear from the enemy.
  • (3) The Bansenshukai does not mention using the saya (scabbard) as a means to deflect or block the oncoming spear.  In the Tomo-ryu this part of the transmission is a crucial aspect towards the technique.
  • (4) The Bansenshukai has no mention at all with how to stab or position the sword when going in to finish the enemy.  This aspect is covered in depth as to why the sword needs to be drawn the way that it is, and used the way that it is, when learning the technique.

.

In the end, different ninja ryuha do similar techniques differently. As the 21st Soke of the Tomo-ryu it is my responsibility to teach these ancient ways and preserve those techniques that have been passed down to me.  However, because we teach various ryuha within the Budo Ryu Kai and because I encourage my students to research and learn as much as they can – it is also my responsibility to explain how a technique from one ryuha is different from another ryuha.  It is also my responsibility to explain and teach techniques from public historical sources such as the Bansenshukai, Ninpiden and Shoninki, explain the similarities and differences from them towards the 7 warrior traditions that we have within the Budo Ryu Kai.  This gives the students a much deeper understanding and greater perception of the ancient ninja and samurai martial arts, what they truly did, and how the truly did it.

.

This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

What Inspired You To Start Your Journey In The Martial Arts? | Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson

In this video, I ask the question, what inspired you to start your martial arts training?  This is a topic that is very different and personal for all of us.  Some of us were inspired by people, while others were inspired by books, comic books, cartoons and videos games.
.
Anyone who knows me, knows that Teela from the MOTU (Masters of the Universe), was my original Martial Arts inspiration. As a young transgender child, this was a very powerful cartoon for me on many levels.
.
Regardless of our inspiration, what is important is finding something that will inspire us to be the best us that we can be. For me, it was the Master of the Universe cartoon and all of the small lessons that were hidden within. What was it for you?

Old Story: The Fish & The Fisherman (Do Not Chase Desire) Ninjutsu Martial Arts Philosophy Lesson

In this video, I teach an old zen philosophy lesson called: “The Fish and The Fisherman”. This is a lesson that has been passed down for many years to teach us to not focus on desire.
.
In the Budo Ryu Kai we study 7 warrior traditions. 1of the 7 warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu Kai is Gyokko-ryu Kosshijutsu. In studying Gyokko-ryu, we learn the 9 rules of Gyokko-ryu. 1 of the 9 rules of Gyokko-ryu is: “Vices dissipate your proficiency”. Today’s philosophy is a good artistic lesson to help understand this particular thought from Gyokko-ryu.
.
However, as a ninjutsu practitioner you should learn how to use desire to help you complete the mission or objectives. At the end of the video I briefly mention my time “working” in “adult entertainment” and now (in the present day) my students know what I was really doing, who I was working for, and why. I will not get into detail here, however I will say, when I convinced my most hated opposition online to “believe” the “new identity” of me in adult entertainment, it gave me an opportunity to do this job. They (online haters) started posted these “facts” online of me as a escort, etc… This helped me create a new persona and allowed me to get into places to do things that I would not have been able to do. This aspect of creating a new persona, making it believable and getting into places you should not be is a very intricate aspect towards ninjutsu and is something that I will discuss in depth in one of my upcoming books.

Soke Anshu | Drowning in Knowledge & Starving for Wisdom | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training (Ninpo)

In this video, I discuss the philosophy and understanding of how, within the modern social construct of which we live, we are drowning in knowledge and starving for wisdom. This is a crucial lesson for all that is studying the ancient ways, because we live in a world with knowledge so easily obtained and wisdom never attained.

Understanding the Historical Use of the Ninjato (忍刀) Ninja Sword History | Ninjutsu Martial Arts

In this video, I explain what the ninjato is, as taught from the Tomo-ryu tradition.  There are many koryu in Japan, and all of them will have a different explanation as to what things were and how they were used in ancient Japan.  On the scrolls of the Tomo-ryu, it is very clear, that the “ninjato” are the “blades of the ninja” that were specifically modified to help them on their mission.
.
Many times people see the kanji “nin” (忍) and following it would be the kaji for blade, sword, spear, bow and arrow, etc – and they automatically assume it is “ninja”.  Many times it is NOT “ninja” at all. In fact, the majority of the time they are talking about concealed or hidden weapons. Remember the kanji “nin” (忍) is associated with ninja, but it all means hidden, concealed, stealth, endurance and perseverance.  So you have to understand the context of the scroll and why the scroll was written to understand the use of the weapon.
.
This is why the kuden and transmission is so important. As Soke of this tradition, it is my responsibility to make sure that the true history and tradition is passed on correctly to the next generation.

Training In REAL Ninja Combat Tactics | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Techniques (Ninpo) Taijutsu, Jujutsu

In this video, I explain why these ancient ninja combat tactics have to be preserved to the present day.  In a world full of greed, hate, prejudice and violence, I am glad to say we are one of the few schools that still do teach, train and preserve the TRUE ancient ways of the ninja.
.
Taijutsu and swinging around some stick – and learning some 15th century story is not going to save your ass against extreme Violence… That is a fact. The only thing that is going to protect you is skills. You either have these skills or you don’t.

Flexibility of the Mind: DO NOT GIVE TOO MUCH | Martial Arts / Self-Defense Training Techniques

In this video, I discuss the importance of understanding the flexibility of the mind.  Too many times people give more energy towards one realm than the other. As martial artist we need to find balance in all realms. It does not matter if it is the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual realm; we need to give it – its proper place and proper energy to be able to see the whole picture clearly, find balance in life, as well as properly defend ourselves and the ones that we love.

Soke Anshu 2020 Message: Focus On You & Your Martial Arts Training | Ninjutsu, Ninpo, Bujutsu, Budo

In this video, I share some thoughts on training with a few of my students at the Budo Ryu Kai Hombu Dojo in Kansas City. The message was to instill the idea that the students need to focus on themselves and their training. They need to leave the negativity outside. They need to get away from all of the hate that we see all over the media, and take the time to make themselves better through the student of the martial arts.

What Does “Anshu” Mean? & What Is A Warrior Name In Japanese Koryu Martial Arts? | Ninjutsu, Ninpo

Many times people ask me why I took the title “Anshu” from Stephen K. Hayes. The facts are; I didn’t. There are many different kanji, all with many different meanings and interpretations.  The kanji that An-shu Stephen K. Hayes uses as a title for his martial arts teachings is not the same kanji for the warrior name “Anshu” that was giving to me from my master.
.
Stephen K. Hayes:
“Title” = An-shu means: Custodian of the Spiritual Inn / Enlightened One
.
Christa Jacobson:
“Warrior Name” = Anshu (暗主) means: Dark Master
.
The reality is, many practitioners who study the ancient arts cannot read or write Japanese, so the come up with their own opinions and post incorrect information on the internet.  Hopefully this will clear up the meaning of the “title” of Stephen K Hayes (An-shu) and the warrior name giving to me by my master (Anshu).

Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson: My Extreme Approach To Ninjutsu Training | Ninja Martial Arts (Ninpo)

In this video I (Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson) explain why my approach towards ninjutsu training and physical conditioning is so extreme. We live in a world where violence, aggression, prejudice and hate is on the rise.  The only way to excel and perform in a violent extreme situation is to be highly skilled in violence, through extreme training.

I Disagree With You Because… | Martial Arts Philosophy Lesson: Ninjutsu, Ninpo, Bujutsu, Budo,

In this video I discuss the idea of “disagreement” and why so many people feel that they need to voice their opinion of disagreement. It takes a very shallow minded person to declare that they will disagree with someone, when they do not have all of the information before making that statement.  The world is full of closed minded, hateful bigots.  As true practitioners of Budo, the goal is not just to be better; it is to be able to help those that are around us as well. Even though we all make different choices in life, we are all here for the same reason.  This truth has to be understood when training in the martial arts.

The Art of Tenjin-ryu Jujutsu: True Traditional Budo Training | Martial Arts Fighting Techniques

In this video, I share a brief demonstration on The Art of Tenjin-ryu Jujutsu. A True Art of Traditional Budo Training.

.
[History of the Art, taken from www.BudoRyuNinjutsu.com ]

Tenjin Ryū Jujutsu (天神流柔術), literally meaning “Gentle Art of the Heavenly Divine” has it’s historical roots, classical kata and training methods dating back centuries to Japans warring past of the Sengoku period (戦国時代) and can be classified as a traditional school of jujutsu.  It was founded by Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson by combining all of her koryū bujutsu (古流; classical Japanese warrior arts) and gendai budō (現代武道; modern martial arts) training that she experienced during her time as an apprentice.
.
Just as in the Koka-ryu school of Kempo, Soke Anshu wanted to share with her students all of the principals and strategies that was taught to her from her masters and share that with them.  She also wanted a specific method of jujutsu for the Budo Ryu Kai that blends, flows and connects the other six traditions of the school together and can adapt in any situation.  The Tenjin-ryu school of jujutsu is the glue that connects the other traditions together within the Budo Ryu Kai.

The Art of Koka-ryu Kempo: True Traditional Budo Training | Martial Arts Fighting Techniques

In this video, I share a brief demonstration on The Art of Koka Ryu Kempo.

[History of the Art, taken from www.BudoRyuNinjutsu.com]

Koka Ryu Kempo (甲賀流拳法) was constructed by Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson as a system for self-improvement, self-discipline and self-protection.  Soke Anshu trained in many different kenpo / kempo systems and wanted to compile all of her training into one practice of kempo calling it, Koka-ryu Kempo.  The Art of Koka-ryu Kempo is a direct lineage of Kosei Ryu Kempo which originated from the Shiga prefecture of Japan, also known as Koka.

In 2006 Soke Anshu inherited the art of Kosei-ryu Kempo, making her the 4th Soke within its lineage.  However; since she was already teaching kempo as part of the Budo Ryu Kai curriculum, she had to make a choice.  To either cut out all of the kempo teachings that are not Kosei-ryu, and only teach the Kosei-ryu methods, or to take the art of Kosei-ryu Kempo that she inherited, and combine it with her other kempo training and experiences.

Soke Anshu decided to combine all of her kempo training, principals, and strategies together under the Budo Ryu banner; constructing the art of Koka-ryu Kempo.  Since Kosei-ryu came from the Shiga prefecture of Japan, and it’s the fundamental base of the Budo Ryu kempo curriculum, it is only fitting to have named the kempo training Koka-ryu Kempo which translates out as: “Koka School of Fist Fighting”.

How To Properly Practice Your Kata | Martial Arts Training Techniques: Taijutsu, Kenpo, Karate

Learn how to improve your martial arts kata, using ancient training techniques from Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson of the Budo Ryu Kai (Budo Ryu Ninjutsu).

When you are training kata, you need to be able to “flow”, similar to the way that you breathe to circulate and flow air through the body. You also have to need to be able to “beat”, similar to the way that your heart beats to keep you alive. You need both the hard and the soft working together to properly practice your kata.

The Sad Truth in the World of Martial Arts Business & Self-Defense Industry

In this video, I discuss the sad truth in the world of the martial arts. Do not get me wrong, I love the martial arts and the ninjutsu community.  But that does not mean I love everything that’s in it.  There are things that are absolutely terrible in the world of martial arts and self defense business; and in this video, I detail 3 things that are the sad truth in the industry.

  • The majority of teachers cannot do what they claim they can do, and or, they cannot do what they teach.
  • The majority of teachers spend more time on the perception of their dojo’s image, rather than the development of their student’s skills.
  • The majority of teachers give out easy rank, to make more money. In doing this, it hinders the student’s development because the importance is not on the student; it is on the profit margin on the dojo.

I refuse to participate in the above 3 points.  The art, the transmission of the art and the relationships with the students and their development is what is important.

This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

Budo Ryu Kai Dojo Discussion | Toughen Up! Train with Intensity! | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training

In this video, I discuss the importance of training with intensity! If you learn how to be tough, you can have a huge advantage in the world of self-defense. In the world that we live in, there are so many weak ass, pathetic cowards that have only learned how to fight with words and keyboards.  Most of them have a huge Amazon book collections and know their way around a library.  NONE OF THEM can actually fight.  NONE OF THEM will be able to protect themselves in a real fight.  ALL OF THEM RUN THEIR MOUTH & POST CRAP ONLINE.  Why?  Because it makes them feel better about themselves.

In the real world, we have to train with more intensity to be able to withstand any attack that may come our way.  We need to be able to protect ourselves and the ones that we love against all forms of violence.  The only way to do this is to train.  At the end of the day, if you cannot physically do what you need to do, when you need to do it, you will fail. Your life or your loved ones life may depend on your training. So train like it does.
