Michi Hidou (道秘道) The Way and the Secret Way
.
In the picture above Soke Anshu is with a student at the Annual Shinobi-no-mono Stealth Camp (2012) demonstrating various outfits and disguises of the shinobi. Utilizing many different outfits as a means of camouflage as well as disguises, the ninja can move undetected within the crowd or in the shadows.
.
Above you see Soke dressed as Ronin (浪人; person of the waves) which falls within the philosophy of Tsune-no-kata (常之型; normal look). For demonstrational purposes at the event, the student placed on a Shinobi Shozoku (忍び装束) called the Fuyu Shozoku (冬装束; ninja winter garb) which is a classical outfit of the ninja to move undetected (陰忍術; Innin-jutsu) in the winter months of snow and ice. All concepts of disguise and camouflage are covered when the students of the Budo Ryu understand Kage-no-kame (影之構).

Budo Student for Life,…

“Get over the idea that only children should spend their time in study. Be a student so long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life.” – Henry L. Doherty

I hope that you all enjoy today’s lesson.  I know that it is only a simple quote; but sometimes, that is all that is needed to keep us on a positive track on our journey of Budo.

Thank you all for your support.

Capturing True Budo

Without knowledge, a high level of warrior skill will never be focused.
Without high level of skill, one may never attain a high level of true strength.
Without true strength, knowledge may not be applied.
Without applied knowledge, one will never find wisdom.
Without wisdom, one will never find the enlightenment of which they seek.

This is a insight towards training that I came up with this morning, not for sure if it makes sense to any of you, but it makes sense to me, I hope that it helps all of you with your training.

Thank you all for your support!

Shibumi-do (下味道) The Way Towards Effortless Perfection

Photo Taken: 11.15.2011
Budo Ryu; Hombu Dojo
武道流忍術道場

Inspiration is what people remember, not defamation. No one wants to go to the grave forgotten and the only way to be remembered is to inspire the ones around you.

Even if it is someone that you only met for a brief moment in your life, you can share with them the greatest moment in their life, just by a simple thank you, or a smile. To some, this changes their perception of the day.

There is this Japanese term called “Shibumi” (下味) which means effortless perfection. Kobayashi Sensei always told me that there is not such thing as perfection, and the better you get, the further your idea or perception of perfection is. he always used the term “Shibumi-do” or the “way of effortless perfection.”

He said the he uses this term because no one can achieve perfection (Shibumi) they can only dedicate themselves towards the idea of it (thus the usage of the kanji “Do). But this in itself is a stagnant thought because this is not a moment of time, this is a philosophy that you have to dedicate to within your journey of life; so he always told me good luck in that journey (Shibumi-do).

Everyone wants to tell you what you can and cant do, but no one other than yourself knows what you are capable of. Dedicate yourself to the things that make you complete. Inspire the ones around you, to become better and if you know what you are worth, than go get it. No one is going to give it to you.

I hope that you understand my rambling thoughts this morning, it made sense to me as I wrote it.

Thank you all for your support.

Take care, be safe and good luck in your journey of Budo.

Happiness In Life

Happiness in Life

Soke Tomo-ryu; Anshu Christa Jacobson

Photo Taken: 10.18.2011
After class at the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Hombu.

Yesterday’s classes at the Hombu Dojo made me realize how lucky I am to be able to do what I love to do everyday and make a living at it. I mean that is everyone’s dream isn’t it? To be able to do what you love to do, express who you are to the world and make a living doing it? The unfortunate thing is that not many get this opportunity or maybe,… not many are willing to take the chance.

It was said once by Confucius “Choose a job that you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”. He was right. I get the pleasure of everyday waking up and spending the rest of the day dedicated to the authentic ninjutsu and traditional samurai bujutsu and help teach the martial arts to the students of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo.

Sure; there is work that has to be done; we make video downloads, shinobi no mono magazine, DVD’s for the Ninjutsu Super Store, and uploads and updates to the Budo Ryu Online Dojo as well as keeping in contact with all of our students and supports with our myspace page, facebook page and youtube channel. The greatest part that I find with what I do is that I never get frustrated at all because of what I am doing, I always feel like I want to do more than what I have; and to me that is a good thing!

You only have one life to live, live it to be happy, and don’t be scared to be yourself, that is what is going to really make you happy. Happiness starts within and then it is expressed outward. Just like art.

BUDO RYU 2011 – SHINOBI STEALTH CAMP, 武道流, 忍者, 忍び, 忍の者, 忍術

Here is the video promo of the 2011 Shinobi no Mono Stealth Camp! This is the 4th Annual Shinbobi Stealth Camp held by the Budo Ryu; School of the Warrior Wary. Headed by Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson!

This shows some of the training that took place at the event, we did not place everything on this video promo, but enough for the viewers to capture the meaning and essence of the training!

In this video we use the music from ” The Final Cut; Friday the 13th Movie 2009″ as many of you know I was a music major and love the horror movies, mostly the music as it has so much depth with the transitions of the melody. That is why I choose this song as it has so much depth, so many things going on with the music, yet they all fit together to make this beautiful song. This was very symbolic of the training of the 2011 Shinobi no Mono Stealth Camp.

I hope that you all enjoy the video promo, we had a great time at the camp. if you are interested in training in authentic ninjutsu or traditional samurai bujutsu, you can see our website at

This DVD will be released in the International Ninjutsu Super Store along with all of the videos that are released by the Budo Ryu!

MONOMI – Shinobi Hand Torch

Soke Christa Jacobson

MONOMI – Shinobi Hand Torch
Photo above: Anshu with a “Monomi” or ninja scouting hand torch.

When on a night mission within a residence or building, the Shinobi had a small hand torch that they used to be able to see within or to see into. This would help aid in “stealing in”. It was small, easily concealable and just as easy to put out in case they felt they were seen.

Split a cedar board to get a piece of 4 or 5 Sun (12 or 15 cm). Apply a little sulphur on the tip and hold it out. This is called Monomi Scouting Torch and used by the shinobi to look inside a window or a knothole.

Goshiki mai – Five Colored Rice of the Ninja

Soke Christa Jacobson

Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson

GOSHIKI-MAI

Secret Messages were conveyed with the use of elaborate codes that would be overlooked by anyone but the recipient. The ninja’s ploy included rice grains dyed different colors (goshiki-mai) as well as knotted rope (yuinawa-moji) as well as letters that only their allies could understand.

In understanding the “Goshiki-mai” (Five-color rice) Rice grains were dyed blue, yellow, red, black or purple and arranged in different combinations or patterns. With this technique, the ninja could make over 100 different codes.

There is a new Historical Ninjutsu video being released this week on this topic from myself and Antony Cummins that you can all see and understand these old methods of secretly passing information.

Soke Christa Jacobson

TEPPOJUTSU – THE ART OF FIREARMS
Photo taken from:
Temaezutsu seisaku no koto of the Nakajima-ryu hojutsu kankiroku
(taken from Anshu Christa Jacobson private collection)

Teppo Jutsu refers to the “art of the rifle”, a warrior art practiced in feudal Japan by the Samurai.

Contrary to popular belief, the Samurai did use firearms and as with all their weapons arts they were quite skilled “riflemen”.

Similar to the other weapons employed, for the Samurai this art encompassed all aspects of the rifle as a weapon: achieving accuracy, proper cleaning and maintenance, rifle and ammunition design and development, as well as using the rifle in Close Quarters Combat. This latter included such skills as weapons retention, striking with the rifle as a blunt weapon, and even the use of the bayonet (Juken Jutsu).

“One of many things the Japanese were interested in were Portuguese guns. The Japanese were already familiar with gunpowder (invented by, and transmitted from China), and had been using basic Chinese guns and cannon tubes called Teppō (鉄砲 Lit.”Iron cannon”) for around 270 years before the arrival of the Portuguese. The Portuguese guns however were light, had a matchlock firing mechanism and were easy to aim with.

The Famous Daimyo, Oda Nobunaga, made extensive use of guns (arquebus) playing a key role in the Battle of Nagashino. Within a year, Japanese swordsmiths and ironsmiths managed to reproduce the mechanism and mass-produce the guns. Barely fifty years later, “by the end of the 16th century, guns were almost certainly more common in Japan than in any other country in the world”, its armies equipped with a number of guns dwarfing any contemporary army in Europe (Perrin). The guns were strongly instrumental in the unification of Japan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, as well as in the invasion of Korea in 1592 and 1597″.

I hope that you all enjoyed today’s lesson on Teppojutsu!

Anshu Christa Jacobson – The Eye of the Warrior

Soke Christa Jacobson

Anshu Christa Jacobson - Eyes of the Warrior

Bushi no Me – “Eyes of the Samurai”
(sight and insight)

A warrior does not see things in an ordinary way. A warrior has trained their mind and spirit to process the impulses from a highly refined manner. A warrior does not focus on one thing, but sees one thing.

To the warrior, the ideas of “eye sight” and “sight” are different, there are many different methods of sight and insight with a warrior.

NIKUGEN (Naked Eye)
TENGEN (Neutral Eye)
EGEN (Interpretive Eye)
SHINGEN / HOGEN (Compassionate Eye)

The training for all methods of warrior sight and insight for the samurai is called “Bushi no men Rensho” The complete understanding of these concepts will be found in Chapter Three of Budo Ryu Kai; School of War. This book details all of the fundamentals of the Budo Ryu Kai as well as the fundamentals and basics of all Budo.

This book is a must have for any practitioner of the Japanese martal arts and is to be released later this year!

I hope that you all enjoy the lesson!

Historical Ninjutsu Research Team Video #2 – Shoninki – Ninja Assassination

The Historical Ninjutsu Research Team has made a short demonstration from the authentic ninja manual of the Shoninki’s english translation called “True Path of the Ninja“, one of the most prominent historical text that we have left from the feudal era of Japan.

In this video you will see 3 waza (techniques) demonstrated:

Waza #1 – is the actual kata /waza from the historical manuals.

Waza #2 – is a henka or variation based off of the historical manuals to show that there are many different ways to interpret the translations and many ways that you can change the technique to fit different aspects to the same strategy.
Waza #3 – This technique is actually a “off shoot” or “similar” situation from team video #1 (sword thief) in that video people really got all upset and started gossiping over something as little as the rope of the swords. They wanted me on Top,..They did not want me on Bottom,..sorry I meant the rope needs to be under me, not on me ;). So waza #3 is to show humor with the training, I hope that people can see the humor in it, the previous technique really is about feeling the rope being pulled and then acting accordingly. As the technique goes on you will see that it is also a henka based of the translation of this technique in this video.

The Shoninki was written in 1682 by Natori Masatake of the Kishu-ryu school of ninjutsu. Although the text is not very long, it reflects a certain way of thinking about ninjutsu, which is most interesting to anyone who wishes to learn more than just techniques. It is also important to keep in mind that the text was written for a selected contemporary audience. Without commentary and interpretation of the text, much would be lost. Therefore, a great translation is needed to understand the depth of the shoninki and the teachings of the kishu ryu school of ninjutsu.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK – TRUE PATH OF THE NINJA FOR ANY REAL SERIOUS NINJUTSU PRACTITIONER.

I hope that you all enjoy the video promo!

“Budo Ryu Ninjutsu is a martial art used to protect people. So when training in these methods of Traditional Japanese Bujutsu,…you have to understand if you loose,…so does the future of the ones that you are trying to protect.
