Anshu Christa Jacobson – Meaning of Kata

Anshu Christa Jacobson

Today’s Lesson 3.29.2011
“MEANING OF KATA”
Photo taken 2011 for video promo of “True Ninja Traditions”

There are different types of training practices in the marital arts, none of which is more popular yet so mis-understood as kata.

Kata (型) or “form” is a set pattern of movement to teach one how to fight against an attack. This is simply the basic knowledge of that kata, the meaning goes even deeper than that.

Once the student understands the basic idea of it, they need to understand that kata is simply a strategy that the masters before us placed into the training to give us another strategy, principal and philosophy towards fighting as well as a way of life.

Kata is the link that we have to the past, many loose the densho and makimono, many misunderstand the kuden, but kata has stayed with us.

Kata is taught in a “form” or a set movement against a set attack, yet to master kata all of the masters say the same thing, you have to not do the kata, but do the essence of the kata.

********************

“”You may train for a long time, but if you merely move your hands and feet and jump up and down like a puppet, learning karate is not very different from learning a dance. You will never have reached the heart of the matter; you will have failed to grasp the quintessence of karate” – Gichin Funakoshi

********************

When you are practicing kata, do not just learn the initial physical move and say that you have it, what you need to ask yourself when you are practicing kata is this.

(1) What is the attack, What is the defense?
(2) What is the concept, Can I apply it other ways?
(3) What is the strategy that this kata is teaching?
(4) What Ryu does this come from (deeper meaning)?
(5) How does it feel, what feeling am I protecting and how can I apply this same defense to other aspects of my life?
(6) How many different “physical forms” or “ways’ can I do the kata and still stay true to the essence, strategy, principals and philosophy of the kata?

To master this you have to train hard, press your body physically, mentally and emotionally. You need to do this with every kata in the ryu, if you only do this with a few, you may understand a few kata, but you do not master the ryu (school). To master the ryu, these concepts has to be applied to all kata of all of the ryu-ha.

There are many people that like to “critic” others kata and try to say that they are wrong, when in essence this very action shows the level of skill that they have as a marital artist. As well as their understanding towards kata and the physical aspects of training within the martial arts.

********************

“”Principles of motion take precedence over sequence of motion” – Ed Parker

********************

KATA KEIKO:

(1) Plant the seed.
(2) Make a strong root
(3) grow from that and make a stronger foundation.
(4) understand it and branch out from the base.
(5) master it and watch all of the beautiful things grow.

(*** These five rules of kata are from my teacher Kobayashi Sensei and are also relevant towards the 5 elements of the Godai ***)
Watch the Video Promo from the picture above!
(1) See if you get the meaning of the kata
(2) How many different ways can you do the same principals with different motion?

Anshu Christa Jacobson – Budo Ryu – Actions Speak Louder Words

I have never responded to a forum attack or a youtube / video attack in anyway, I let them talk and I simply go about my business promoting good ethics and morals to my students. I have nothing to defend, the Budo Ryu is a school of traditional martial arts that trains and teaches 7 warrior traditions.

— SORRY BUT I AM NOT SO INSECURE THAT I HAVE TO TALK TO A WEBCAM AND TRASH OTHERS ONLINE SO THAT IN MY HEAD I CAN FEEL THAT PEOPLE WILL LIKE ME, AND LIKE WHAT I DO —

I have to hold a position that reflects the dignity of the school. If I am going to tell my students that you should not fight unless you have to, that if the bully is talking than just walk the other way. If I am going to say this to my students, than that is the action that I will reflect from the school too.

Fighting is always the last answer, only fight if you have too, and these kids are talking to a computer, they are not here on the mats, they are talking to a webcam all over the world. I spend my time training, teaching and dedicating myself to the study of the arts. That is all. None of this online hate and slander has anything to do with being a good person or helping myself, my family, my friends, the school or my students in anyway at all.

I hope that you all enjoy the video and understand why I do not take part, the Budo Ryu is a professional school of marital arts and will conduct itself as such.

Art of War – Part 10

Photo – Woodblock print of Kusunoki Masashige.

*********************************

“Fierceness is essential in the realm of war. It cannot be dependent of the amount of destruction that you want to inflict. This emotion has to be drown upon by the honor that you have for your family, loyalty that you have for your lord. Fierceness is a natural state when the troops see the wisdom of their leader and attack like the power of the heavens.”

“It is very important for a warlord to have access to gaining information, the use of spies is crucial. Some of the information us useful and some is deception, it is up to the leader as to how to move and attack.”

“Spies and guerrilla agents are the utmost importance to the successful operation of the warlord. Only those who are intelligent and enlightened can use them properly. Without secret operations a war is a meaningless act of violence that does nothing except destroy all of the people and all the resources.”

I wrote 10 lessons on the art of war. Study these lessons well, to master them means you understand the true arts of war.

(my personal interpretations and research taken from Sun Tzu’s book; (Art of War)
