Shuko (手鉤) – Kakushi Buki (隠し武器) – Ninki (忍器)

shuko

he Shuko (手鉤) falls under the category of kakushi buki (隠し武器, hidden weapons) and is only found, historically, within the densho of the Togaure-ryu (戸隠流) school of Ninpo Taijutsu (忍法体術).

Shuko translates out as: “hand hook”, but more commonly referred to as the “climbing claw”. The Shuko is a metal band around the palm of the hand with four metal spikes projecting from the palm. This particular ninki (忍器) was said to have its original use in agricultural and farming, as a way to help pick up hay and straw.

The shuko is one of the three secrets found in Togakure-ryu Sanpo Hiden (戸隠流三法秘伝) and was used as a specific tool to aid in climbing and close quarter combative situations.

SHINOBI ROKU-KI (忍び六器)

6 tools

SHINOBI ROKU-KI (忍び六器)
—————————————
In the Shoninki, written by Natori Masatake of Kishu, in 1681. Natori writes of six tools that every shinobi would take on a mission.

(01) Amigasa (straw hat)
(02) Kagi Nawa (rope with hook at the end)
(03) Sekibitsu (stones pencil for taking notes)
(04) Kusuri (field medicine / first aid kit)
(05) Sanjaku Tenugi (long piece of cloth)
(06) Tsuketake (tool for making fire)

In the Budo Ryu Dojo, we use the term Shinobi Roku-ki (6 tools of the ninja) when talking about these specific tools that was written within the Shoninki text.

The picture is taken of Anshu Christa Jacobson, at the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Hombu Dojo, displaying these six tools of the ninja, from her private collection.

Kakushi Buki (隠し武器; Hidden Weapons)
Shinobi Fukiya (忍び 吹き矢; Ninja Blowgun)

The fukiya (吹き矢) is often considered to have been a hidden weapon of the ninja. It is said, there were numerous ninja families, such as Togakure-ryū, & Tomo-ryū, which used the fukiya. The ninja utilized this weapon from a concealed location using poisoned darts to attack, distract or evade from the enemy.

Sanjaku-tenugui (三尺手拭い)

Soke Christa Jacobson

Picture Above:
Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson teaching Tomo ryu methods (戸猛流) utilizing various ninki (忍器; ninja tools) at the 2012 Tomo-ryu Shinobi Keiko (戸猛流忍 稽古).
.
Here she teaches various ways of using the Sanjaku-tenugui (三尺手拭い; 3 ft cloth) to aid in shinobi (忍び) missions.
.
A Tenugui (手拭い) is a thin Japanese hand towel made of cotton and was a common item during the Sengoku Jidai (戦国時代) and the Edo Jidai (江戸時代) for anyone of any social class to carry as it could be used as a head wrap, washcloth, dishcloth, headband, souvenir or decoration and as a head covering in Kendo (剣道).
.
It is typically about 35 by 90 centimeters in size (approx: 1 1/2 – 3ft in length), plain weaved and is almost always dyed with some pattern.  The shinobi (忍び) would take advantage of this common item and use it to aid them on missions in a variety of ways such as:  creating a shinobi zukin (忍び頭巾; ninja hood) climbing various objects, tying various objects together such as doors, people, tools and weaponry.

ANSHU CHRISTA JACOBSON; BUDO RYU SHINOBI KAJUTSU 武道流 忍び火術 – 火遁之術, 火薬術, 火器

This video is a very brief introduction to the kajutsu training within the training halls of the Budo Ryu — School of the Warrior Way.

The Budo Ryu is dedicated to teaching traditional samurai bujutsu and authentic ninjutsu. To do this the Budo Ryu has 7 Warrior Traditions that it teaches from:

7 WARRIOR TRADITIONS OF THE SCHOOL:
* Koka Ryu Kempo (甲賀流拳法)
* Tenjin Ryū Jujutsu (天神流柔術)
* Tomo Ryu Shinobijutsu (戸猛流忍術)
* Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (英信流居合術)
* Koto Ryu Koppojutsu (虎倒流骨法術)
* Gyokko-Ryū Kosshijutsu (玉虎流骨指術)
* Togakure-ryū Ninpo Taijutsu (戸隠流忍法体術)

The majority of Kajutsu (fire techniques) training outside of the historical research from the ancient scrolls of the samurai and ninja; comes from two of the warrior traditions. The two primary traditions within our school that details Kajutsu or “fire techniques” are Tomo Ryu Shinobijutsu and Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu.

In this video you will see that the Budo Ryu beaks down the kajutsu training into 3 areas:

Katon no jutsu (火遁之術) is the section that teacher – evasion, infiltration and deception.

Kayakujutsu (火薬術) is the section that teaches – firearms, explosives and gunpowder.

Kaki (火器) is the section that teaches “fire tools” these are tools that the ninja used on missions that aided them in the art of stealth and use fire, smoke, hot coals and ash.

I hope that you enjoy the video! Thank you all for your support!

Take Care, Be Safe and Good luck in your Journey of Budo!
