Samurai Philosophy: Always Do The Right Thing (Personal Integrity & Honor)

Old Story: The Fish & The Fisherman (Do Not Chase Desire) Ninjutsu Martial Arts Philosophy Lesson

In this video, I teach an old zen philosophy lesson called: “The Fish and The Fisherman”. This is a lesson that has been passed down for many years to teach us to not focus on desire.
.
In the Budo Ryu Kai we study 7 warrior traditions. 1of the 7 warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu Kai is Gyokko-ryu Kosshijutsu. In studying Gyokko-ryu, we learn the 9 rules of Gyokko-ryu. 1 of the 9 rules of Gyokko-ryu is: “Vices dissipate your proficiency”. Today’s philosophy is a good artistic lesson to help understand this particular thought from Gyokko-ryu.
.
However, as a ninjutsu practitioner you should learn how to use desire to help you complete the mission or objectives. At the end of the video I briefly mention my time “working” in “adult entertainment” and now (in the present day) my students know what I was really doing, who I was working for, and why. I will not get into detail here, however I will say, when I convinced my most hated opposition online to “believe” the “new identity” of me in adult entertainment, it gave me an opportunity to do this job. They (online haters) started posted these “facts” online of me as a escort, etc… This helped me create a new persona and allowed me to get into places to do things that I would not have been able to do. This aspect of creating a new persona, making it believable and getting into places you should not be is a very intricate aspect towards ninjutsu and is something that I will discuss in depth in one of my upcoming books.

Zen Philosophy: In a Beginners Mind… | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training Techniques (Ninpo)

In this video, I discuss the zen philosophy:

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s mind there are few.”
– Shunryu Suzuki

In studying the old ways of the samurai and ninja, we need to understand and dedicate ourselves to honor, loyalty, discipline and code.  These things unfortunately are not popular actions of today and generally only talked about in old stories.  Here, at the Budo Ryu Kai, these actions hold great meaning towards our study of “the way”…

Live Life Outside The Box – Connecting To Natural Energy | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training (Ninpo)

In this video, I teach an old Confucius lesson and explain why everyone needs to express individually, live life outside the box, connect to natural energy and find out who they truly are.
.
In studying the old ways of the samurai, we learn the samurai kokoro.  The first philosophy that is taught is: “Know Thyself”.  One cannot truly understand what this is, unless they truly live their own life freely, from all outside influence.

Ninpo Must Be Taught By Kuden | Bansenshukai Historical Ninjutsu Training | Ninja Martial Arts

In this video I share a quote from the Bansenshukai regarding the importance of keeping ninjutsu secret and only teaching those that are truly able to understand the depth of ninpo.
.
The Bansenshukai (萬川集海) translates as “All Rivers Merge into the Sea”, meaning that the Bansenshukai is the ultimate collection of all Iga & Koka Ninjutsu and is regarded by scholars as the Bible of Ninjutsu.

To see just cause and to not act, is lacking in courage.

When one finds oneself in a situation where there is an obvious right and wrong, yet remains silent for fear of loosing face, they prove nothing and show that they lack in the ability to stand up for their own beliefs.  As a warrior one should be ashamed of oneself.

This is not to say that one should go out in search of conflict to show their strength, as this is foolishness as well.  However; if conflict should present itself, one should have the courage, confidence and resolve to make themselves and their righteous beliefs known without fear of loosing something as trivial as public acceptance and stand up for what they believe in and have come to love.

I hope that you all enjoy the lesson.

Take Care, Be Safe and Good Luck in your Journey of Budo.

Shibumi-do (下味道) The Way Towards Effortless Perfection

Photo Taken: 11.15.2011
Budo Ryu; Hombu Dojo
武道流忍術道場

Inspiration is what people remember, not defamation. No one wants to go to the grave forgotten and the only way to be remembered is to inspire the ones around you.

Even if it is someone that you only met for a brief moment in your life, you can share with them the greatest moment in their life, just by a simple thank you, or a smile. To some, this changes their perception of the day.

There is this Japanese term called “Shibumi” (下味) which means effortless perfection. Kobayashi Sensei always told me that there is not such thing as perfection, and the better you get, the further your idea or perception of perfection is. he always used the term “Shibumi-do” or the “way of effortless perfection.”

He said the he uses this term because no one can achieve perfection (Shibumi) they can only dedicate themselves towards the idea of it (thus the usage of the kanji “Do). But this in itself is a stagnant thought because this is not a moment of time, this is a philosophy that you have to dedicate to within your journey of life; so he always told me good luck in that journey (Shibumi-do).

Everyone wants to tell you what you can and cant do, but no one other than yourself knows what you are capable of. Dedicate yourself to the things that make you complete. Inspire the ones around you, to become better and if you know what you are worth, than go get it. No one is going to give it to you.

I hope that you understand my rambling thoughts this morning, it made sense to me as I wrote it.

Thank you all for your support.

Take care, be safe and good luck in your journey of Budo.

Anshu Christa Jacobson – Purpose of the Martial Arts

Soke Christa Jacobson

Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson

PURPOSE OF THE MARTIAL ARTS
(Taken from the upcoming book from the Budo Ryu Kai)

To understand the purpose of the martial arts training we have to understand the goal towards training; Self-Enlightenment, Self-Empowerment, Self-Defense and Self- Protection of oneself and loved ones.

I was once told of an old story of these two master swords man who were closer than brothers. They both mastered the way of the sword, and prepared to start their journey of Musha Shugyo (武者修行). They were going to be separate for many years. So they met one day on the opposite side of this creek, and they agreed that they would re-unite at the same place, at the same date, twelve years later.

Twelve years later, at that date they found that the rain and the course of nature had changed that creek to a large raging water stream so there is no way that they can meet at the exact same place. As one of the samurai determined to live up to his vow and to show his incredible level of skill that he amassed over the twelve years. He took a running jump and leaped over the deadly current of the rushing water, safely on the other side. The other samurai walked upstream and hired a boatman to get row him across safely to meet his close friend.

The skills that one man spent 12 years of training and refining was duplicated effortlessly with a few pennies. Similarly if your goal is only to “win” or “kill”, than we can just buy a gun rather than investing years of training. This is why students of Budo need to understand that Budo is not just about winning. Next we need to understand that winning is more than just defeating your enemy, it is about perfecting yourself – your personal character – as well as your skills as a martial artist.

In Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu (英信流居合術); one of the seven warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu, there is a saying: Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari (Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard) physical skills alone no matter how highly developed are not enough. There is always someone more skillful or someone with a dirty trick that will leave you unprepared. But attitude is better than aptitude in actual combat.

Without having a strong warrior spirit, courage and determination a high level of skill is useless. So the purpose of training in Budo is to develop the mind and spirit of a warrior and such a strength of character that it wins a battle before it begins. This takes years of training to do. These skills also lead to the ability to rid your self of and not respond to hate, slander, anger, fear, selfishness and jealousy as they are counter productive and self-destructive. Simply put frustration is the first sign of mental weakness. Those that get so frustrated that they have to say and do negative things are clearly mentally weak, and as a warrior and a practitioner of budo, you should not concern yourself with this action as this will also lead you off of true path of Budo.

“Kachi wa saya no naka ni ari”
(Victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard)

Take Care, Be Safe and Good Luck in your Journey of Budo.

Anshu Christa Jacobson – Darkness

“Just as the ninja operated in the shadows centuries ago in Japan, a new master of the art again comes from the darkness. Training you has been my greatest accomplishment, and it is clear the student has surpassed her master.”

Kobayashi Ichiro; 20th Soke Tomo Ryu
(The day he awarded Anshu Menkyo Kaiden & Sokeship)

*********************

“Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.”
Sir Terence David John “Terry” Pratchett
(“Terry” Pratchett – English Novelist)

*********************

Art is the desire of a person express them self, to display and share the reactions of their personality to the world.

In this photo I wanted to use the contrast of the room so that people would look at the arts behind me, yet keeping my body / silhouette directly of the middle of the picture, to help with the “IN / YO” of the photograph.

Just as the screen behind me shows the dramatic difference between tiger and dragon, the photo also shows the contrast between light and dark. This in itself is also a major lesson of ninjutsu.

The screen behind me was painted by Kano Tanyu in the edo period (1602-1674) The piece is called Dragon and Waves; Tiger among the Bamboo.

I hope that you all enjoyed today’s lesson.
