Shinobi no michi Vol 1, Mind by Christa Jacobsen

This thick 500 page volume on the Ninjutsu arts is obviously a labor of love for martial artist Anshu Christa Jacobson. Having written several such books myself, I know the kind of dedication and research these endeavors take and I commend her on her efforts — this was not an easy task. She did an excellent job on its presentation and it is sure to be a lasting classic for her Budo Ryu students to whom this work is dedicated and directed.

Shinobi no michi Vol 1, Mind is certainly a worthy read for any enthusiast of the Ninjutsu arts. It contains a rather deep documentation on history and school lineages, and is filled with images of old scrolls, kanji, japanese warrior prints and the author in action. The author explains a lot of the Japanese terms used in these arts. I feel that it would have been much more useful to the reader to have a more in-depth table of contents. Practitioners of Budo Ryu will be very entertained to learn more about their teacher and the trials and tribulations of her budo journey. Jacobson takes considerable time and many pages in the form of an interview to explain her uniqueness and warriorship to those who criticize her. For example, she explains why she left the Bujinkan after obtaining her Yondan (4th dan) to found her own system Budo Ryu and still keep the studies of several of the Bujinkan schools in her curriculum.

While the book includes lots of excellent photos of her doing things, such as demonstrating how certain things were done historically, or photos of her training in the dojo, if the intent was to make a training manual of her teachings for her students it seems lacking in actual instruction. Readers will need to look to future volumes for direct teachings of her system. Overall however, this is a most comprehensive work that has a lot of heart and soul put into it. A true gift to her students.

“Regardless of class, a person who does something beyond his social standing will at some point commit mean or cowardly acts. In the lower classes there are even people who will run away. One should be careful with menials and the like.” – Yamamoto Tsunetomo; 1659-1719
(Translation)
All samurai (bushi) understand that there are hateful and mean people in society that will do anything to tear another down. This can come in all forms from and in the modern day we see: racism, prejudices, sexist, hate crimes, slander, online bullying, lying, cheating, rape, theft and assassination.
As practitioners of Budo, we need to recognize this and clearly see the difference between truth and fact and act appropriately to the situation.
If they are not samurai, than there is no need to show them your fighting technique, as one only fights in the last resort. A samurai you would never let a coward who is not face to face in front of you, get to you. All samurai understand, no person, place, thing or idea is strong enough to get in your head, unless you are weak enough to let them.
I hope that you understand today’s lesson and can see my interpretation of this wonderful classic text on samurai bujutsu.

The Budo Ryu held a Tenjin Ryu Jujutsu kuden event in February of 2012. This is some of the training that we went over during that seminar.
The Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo is a school of traditional Japanese fighting arts and has established 22 schools world wide with its headquarters located in Kansas City, Ks.
The B.R.N.D trains in all areas of traditional Japanese bujutsu (old Japanese fighting arts). This includes hand to hand combat, grappling, ground fighting, all traditional weapons of the ninja and samurai, modern weapon applications and tactics, self-defense, self-protection, survival skills as well as mental and emotional conditioning.

Here is the video promo of the 2011 Shinobi no Mono Stealth Camp! This is the 4th Annual Shinbobi Stealth Camp held by the Budo Ryu; School of the Warrior Wary. Headed by Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson!
This shows some of the training that took place at the event, we did not place everything on this video promo, but enough for the viewers to capture the meaning and essence of the training!
In this video we use the music from ” The Final Cut; Friday the 13th Movie 2009″ as many of you know I was a music major and love the horror movies, mostly the music as it has so much depth with the transitions of the melody. That is why I choose this song as it has so much depth, so many things going on with the music, yet they all fit together to make this beautiful song. This was very symbolic of the training of the 2011 Shinobi no Mono Stealth Camp.

This is a short video of actual ninjutsu on how to leave call signs with other spying agents! These techniques comes from the book True Ninja Traditions. This book is comprised of three historical text of the ancient ninja!

When on a night mission within a residence or building, the Shinobi had a small hand torch that they used to be able to see within or to see into. This would help aid in “stealing in”. It was small, easily concealable and just as easy to put out in case they felt they were seen.
Split a cedar board to get a piece of 4 or 5 Sun (12 or 15 cm). Apply a little sulphur on the tip and hold it out. This is called Monomi Scouting Torch and used by the shinobi to look inside a window or a knothole.
