Importance of Soke: Traditional Ninjutsu and Bujutsu Training in the Modern Era | Ninja Martial Arts
In this video, I discuss the importance of Soke (Grandmaster) and its relation towards training in traditional ninjutsu and bujutsu in the modern era. The transmission of these old arts (Koden) is truly the responsibility of the Soke and has to be done very carefully and in a specific way to ensure its correct passing to the next generation.

Are The Ninja Warriors Really Samurai? | THE TRUTH | Real Historical Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training
Are the ninja warriors really samurai? In this video, I discuss the truth about the ninja and their relation to the samurai. Different schools take a different approach when talking about this subject, because different schools have different ryuha, which has its own unique history and tradition.
Within this organization (Budo Ryu Kai) the answer is simple. Yes. The reason for that is because the main ninjutsu training in this organization comes from the Tomo-ryu. The Tomo-ryu was in fact started as a samurai tradition, and in the beginning, it was a sword school that focused its techniques on the use of the short sword (kodachi). Because I am the 21st Soke of the Tomo-ryu, it is important that my students understand the history and tradition of the Tomo-ryu. From the Tomo-ryu kuden and densho perspective, yes, the ninja are samurai spies who are trained in unconventional warfare (shinobijutsu), thus the name of the tradition: Tomo-ryu Shinobijutsu.
In the video, I used Eishin-ryu Iaijutsu (1 of the 7 warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu Kai) as an example. Eishin-ryu is one of the most popular forms of swordsmanship in the world. I wanted to prove my point about the reality of what people “think” ninjutsu and bujutsu is, and how blurred those lines really are, without being political or bias with a particular answer or position.

Ninjutsu Technique: Yari-Yose (Spear Catcher) | Historical Koryu Ninja Martial Arts Training (Ninpo)
In this video, I teach a technique from the Tomo-ryu called: “Yari-Yose” (Spear Catcher). This is a technique that is passed down in the Tomo-ryu school of Shinobijutsu (戸猛流忍術) to teach how to utilize the sageo (下げ緒) on the scabbard, as a means to disarm a spearman, finish him, then evade.
.
The Bansenshukai (萬川集海) written in 1676, also has a technique called “yari-yose”. Even though this technique has the same name, same objective and purpose; there are slight differences between the technique “yari-yose” in the Bansenshukai, and the “yari-yose” that is taught in the Tom-ryu.
.
In the Bansenshukai it says:
“The yariyose or the ‘spear catcher’ – tie the end of the sageo cord onto your short sword. Draw the sword out fully and hold it in your right hand and the scabbard in your left hand, with the rope hanging between. When a spear is stabbed at you, catch it and wrap the sageo cord around the spear and take the enemy’s weapon.”
– Fujubayashi Yasutake – Bansenshukai (1676)
.
- (1) The Bansenshukai says to tie the rope to your sword while the other end is tied to the saya (scabbard). In the Tomo-ryu, it says to hold one end of the saego in your hand, with the other end tied to the scabbard.
- (2) The Bansenshukai says that the sword should be drawn, with the sageo hanging between the sword and the saya. In the Tomo-ryu the sword is not drawn, it stays in the scabbard, till after you disarm the spear from the enemy.
- (3) The Bansenshukai does not mention using the saya (scabbard) as a means to deflect or block the oncoming spear. In the Tomo-ryu this part of the transmission is a crucial aspect towards the technique.
- (4) The Bansenshukai has no mention at all with how to stab or position the sword when going in to finish the enemy. This aspect is covered in depth as to why the sword needs to be drawn the way that it is, and used the way that it is, when learning the technique.
.
In the end, different ninja ryuha do similar techniques differently. As the 21st Soke of the Tomo-ryu it is my responsibility to teach these ancient ways and preserve those techniques that have been passed down to me. However, because we teach various ryuha within the Budo Ryu Kai and because I encourage my students to research and learn as much as they can – it is also my responsibility to explain how a technique from one ryuha is different from another ryuha. It is also my responsibility to explain and teach techniques from public historical sources such as the Bansenshukai, Ninpiden and Shoninki, explain the similarities and differences from them towards the 7 warrior traditions that we have within the Budo Ryu Kai. This gives the students a much deeper understanding and greater perception of the ancient ninja and samurai martial arts, what they truly did, and how the truly did it.

Understanding the Historical Use of the Ninjato (忍刀) Ninja Sword History | Ninjutsu Martial Arts
In this video, I explain what the ninjato is, as taught from the Tomo-ryu tradition. There are many koryu in Japan, and all of them will have a different explanation as to what things were and how they were used in ancient Japan. On the scrolls of the Tomo-ryu, it is very clear, that the “ninjato” are the “blades of the ninja” that were specifically modified to help them on their mission.
.
Many times people see the kanji “nin” (忍) and following it would be the kaji for blade, sword, spear, bow and arrow, etc – and they automatically assume it is “ninja”. Many times it is NOT “ninja” at all. In fact, the majority of the time they are talking about concealed or hidden weapons. Remember the kanji “nin” (忍) is associated with ninja, but it all means hidden, concealed, stealth, endurance and perseverance. So you have to understand the context of the scroll and why the scroll was written to understand the use of the weapon.
.
This is why the kuden and transmission is so important. As Soke of this tradition, it is my responsibility to make sure that the true history and tradition is passed on correctly to the next generation.
.

The Greatest Ninja Night Raid in Japanese History | Ninjutsu Training Techniques (Ninpo)
In this video, I discuss the greatest ninja night raid in Japanese History! As you all know I am the 21st Soke of the Tomo-ryu Ninja tradition and this historical account comes directly from my tradition!
.
Following the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, Tokugawa employed a group of eighty Kōga ninja, led by Tomo Sukesada. They were tasked to raid an outpost of the Imagawa clan. The account of this assault is given in the Mikawa Go Fudoki, where it was written that Tomo-ryu Kōga ninja infiltrated the castle, set fire to its towers, and killed the castellan along with two hundred of the garrison.

How To Use Juji Shuriken In Combat: Shurikenjutsu Training Techniques | Ninja, Ninjutsu, Ninpo
In this video tutorial I teach the basic understanding of how to use the juji shuriken in combat. This video is not how to throw the shuriken; this video is much deeper than that. In this video I teach how and when to use the shuriken in combat.
.
I would like to add that every school has their own particular ways of throwing the shuriken. I teach that shurikenjutsu, along with all projectile weapons, is based on hitting the target and “form” is not as important. Yes, there is “form” and “kamae”, but in the end, if you are not hitting the target, it does not matter how good your kamae is, it is wrong.
.
Here at the Budo Ryu Kai, we teach to throw all types of shuriken both right and left. We also teach how to throw stepping into the throw as well as not stepping into the throw. We also teach how to throw moving forwards, backwards and sideways, or any other method of combative movement that you can think of.

Random Thoughts: Government Control, It will get worse: Ninjutsu Training, Self Defense & Violence
In this video I discuss my thoughts on the 2020 Tomo-ryu Shinobijutsu Annual Keiko Training Event, Government Control and Social Violence. Here at the Budo Ryu Kai we train to protect ourselves and the ones that we love. To do this, as martial artist, we need to be aware of our surroundings, the things that are going on, as well as knowing the facts of those that are in control of the government.

How To Properly Apply Henka To Your Martial Arts Training | Ninjutsu, Ninpo, Bujutsu, Budo
In this video I discuss the method of how we utilize “henka” in our martial arts training at the Budo Ryu Kai.
Henka (変化) means: change; variation; alteration; mutation; transition; transformation; transfiguration; metamorphosis.
.
In this video I detail the image of a tree and how the seed represents the kata. If you train correctly and nurture good skills, you will grow a solid foundation and have strong roots. From that, the tree will grow branches, limbs and leaves. This is the henka. Just as the branches and limbs are the variations and changes from the seed/root, the henka are the variations / changes from the kata. From here, you get the fruit. This is the useable materials for survival and nourishment. This is where we derive the goshinjutsu (reality based self defense) from the variation to help with our martial arts self defense training.
.

Seizonjutsu: Survival Training within Historical Ninjutsu | Ninja Martial Arts (Ninpo)
Facebook Post Here:
https://www.facebook.com/SokeAnshu/posts/2985723111472256
In this video, “Survival Training within Historical Ninjutsu”, I discuss a specific “jutsu” within the training of Tomo-ryu Shinobijutsu called seizonjutsu. This is a specific aspect of training within Tomo-ryu, which is much different than that of other more popular ninjutsu ryuha such as Togakure-ryu Ninpo Taijutsu.
.
Schools such as the Bujinkan, Genbukan, Jinenkan, etc have never formally had “survival training”, in their curriculum. There has never been a time that you see Masaaki Hatsumi or any other “Togakure-ryu” practitioner in Japan teach: primitive fire making, how to disinfect water while living off of the land, how to build shelters, tracking and survival skills. Ever… They teach taijutsu, kobujutsu, etc. That is not me being disrespectful towards them at all. That is me stating a fact.
.
I could say the same thing towards other martial arts such as: Taekwondo, Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Aikido. They do not teach survival skills either as part of their martial art curriculum. Again, that is not me being mean or hateful. It is me stating a fact.
.
In 2010, I started making seizonjutsu lessons and posts more available in the public and in 2011, I wrote a book (Shinobi no Michi; The Way of the Ninja) detailing the importance of seizonjutsu and its importance within historical ninjutsu training. Then out of no where, all of these people that were trashing me, from these other organizations started teaching “Seizonjutsu”. Some of them are even from some of the organizations that I stated above.
.
In the Budo Ryu Kai, we have 7 warrior traditions and the Togakure-ryu is one of them. There is no “Seizonjutsu” in Togakure-ryu. I teach Togakure-ryu. Like I stated above; There are no videos or books of Masaaki Hatsumi rubbing sticks to create primitive fire. Just look at the Togakure-ryu densho. There is nothing at all written about primitive survival training. However, there are many things that are specific to the Togakure-ryu, that are not found in any other ninjutsu ryuha as well. But this post is not about Togakure-ryu, it is about Seizonjutu, which is a specific skill within Tomo-ryu. So anyone who is teaching Togakure-ryu and is adding “Seizonjutsu” to their curriculum got it from watching and reading my materials…
.
I will say there is a “grey area” with survival training within Togakure-ryu. As a teacher of the Togakure-ryu, I help many other teachers of this particular ryuha and they ask me many questions. The reason that “Seizonjutsu” is NOT within the Togakure-ryu is because they have a set of teachings called the TenChiJin and the individual skills, such as use of water (suiton) use of fire (katon) and so on are found in the TenChiJin. So if you are a Togakure-ryu instructor. Your survival teachings (if you are sticking to the densho) would be in the TenChiJin aspect of training. So if you teach the Togakure-ryu, shouldn’t call it Seizonjutsu, you should be calling it what is written in the densho, and that aspect of part of the TenChiJin.
.

Top 5 Ninja Principals of Stealth / Silent Walking | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training Techniques
In this video, I teach a step by step tutorial of the top ninja principals of stealth walking, a.k,a Shinobi Aruki. Many times people see ninjutsu training as this very specific thing, when in reality, all ninjutsu training if flexible and fluid. The Top 5 Ninja Principals of Stealth Walking Are:
(1) Understand Bodyweight Transfer During Motion.
(2) Control Your Breathing.
(3) Stay Relaxed and Flexible.
(4) Train in Various Elements To Enhance Body Control.
(5) Learn To Adapt To Each Situation & Element.
In the classic ninjutsu text called the Bansenshukai, Fujibayashi Yasutake says:
“Ignorant ninja are not aware of this principal but directly stick to ancient ways and do not even know the simplest of facts…”
“Its folly to see something as unchangeable and stick to an old method without realizing that things keep changing and are in flux.”
– Fujibayashi Yasutake | Bansenshukai; 1676
