Online Ninja: ALL This Knowledge & NO SKILLS | Historical Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training Techniques

In this video, I express my concern with this growing “Online Ninja Community” that has all of this knowledge but no skills.  This is a very dangerous direction for the ninjutsu community because “the way” is in training.  The purpose of training is to be able to defend yourself, the ones you love and the ones that cannot fight for themselves.  Any REAL practitioner of ninjutsu would tell you, we find our balance through the study and practice of ancient warfare.  There needs to be a balance with study and practice… mind and body…

.

In the modern era, we live in a time where if you do not have the answer readily available either online or otherwise, it is fake or not true.  This in itself is a very dangerous way of thinking because these arts were written a certain way, for only a select few to be able to have the knowledge – as long as they were willing to train to obtain the warrior skills needed to be able to use the knowledge.

This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

Importance of Soke: Traditional Ninjutsu and Bujutsu Training in the Modern Era | Ninja Martial Arts

In this video, I discuss the importance of Soke (Grandmaster) and its relation towards training in traditional ninjutsu and bujutsu in the modern era. The transmission of these old arts (Koden) is truly the responsibility of the Soke and has to be done very carefully and in a specific way to ensure its correct passing to the next generation.

Are The Ninja Warriors Really Samurai? | THE TRUTH | Real Historical Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training

Are the ninja warriors really samurai? In this video, I discuss the truth about the ninja and their relation to the samurai. Different schools take a different approach when talking about this subject, because different schools have different ryuha, which has its own unique history and tradition.

Within this organization (Budo Ryu Kai) the answer is simple.  Yes. The reason for that is because the main ninjutsu training in this organization comes from the Tomo-ryu.  The Tomo-ryu was in fact started as a samurai tradition, and in the beginning, it was a sword school that focused its techniques on the use of the short sword (kodachi). Because I am the 21st Soke of the Tomo-ryu, it is important that my students understand the history and tradition of the Tomo-ryu. From the Tomo-ryu kuden and densho perspective, yes, the ninja are samurai spies who are trained in unconventional warfare (shinobijutsu), thus the name of the tradition: Tomo-ryu Shinobijutsu.

In the video, I used Eishin-ryu Iaijutsu (1 of the 7 warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu Kai) as an example. Eishin-ryu is one of the most popular forms of swordsmanship in the world. I wanted to prove my point about the reality of what people “think” ninjutsu and bujutsu is, and how blurred those lines really are, without being political or bias with a particular answer or position.

Ninja Stealth Walking Training Drills | Stealth vs. Silence | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Techniques

In this video, I am discussing ninjutsu training; “The Art of Stealth” with my students before we start stealth training / stealth walking drills.  The deep understanding of “stealth” and what that truly means is essential for anyone who trains in the ninja martial arts.

Everyone thinks of tactics like silence and camouflage when thinking of stealth, but there are so many more tactics that have to be mastered to be good at stealth.  The objective is to go somewhere you are not suppose to be, do things you are not suppose to do, and leave no trace about you or the mission.  Training in stealth is essential to ninjutsu.  It’s sad that so many so called “ninjutsu schools” do not train in these techniques anymore. The positive thing is that here, at the Budo Ryu Kai, we do train in all areas authentic historical ninjutsu.

This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

Ninja Skin Conditioning (Hands, Feet, Toes) Ninjutsu Training: Junan Taiso, Hojo Undo Techniques

In this video, I discuss the ninja skin conditioning/training of the hands, feet and toes within ninjutsu martial arts.  Remember the ninja was a spy, and body sensitivity was a very important aspect within ninjutsu. The ninja would have to feel around in the darkness to find certain things, do certain things, feel certain things and be aware of certain things. To do this, they would need a high level of sensitivity on the bottoms of their hands, feet and toes.

Do not get skin conditioning mixed up with bone conditioning. Yes, the ninja would train to have effective striking (punching and kicking) within their martial arts training.  But this training goes along “impact conditioning” or “bone conditioning” as the practitioner is training to withstand a higher impact and deliver an effective strike with their hands and feet. Impact conditioning is more along the lines of bone and connective tissue training and has nothing to do with the conditioning of the skin for sensitivity.

Togakure-ryu Ninpo Taijutsu: Key Points to Training your Kamae | Ninja Martial Arts (Ninjutsu)

In this video, I teach the key points and purpose to kamae when training in the ninja martial arts of Togakure-ryu Ninpo Taijutsu. Regardless of the Ninjusu ryuha that you are training in, kamae is a very important and essential aspect towards martial arts training.

.

In the Togakure-ryu (戸隠流) school of Ninpo Taijutsu there are 5 basic kamae that every student should master:

  • Ichi-no-Kamae (一之構)
  • Hachimonji-no-kamae (八文字之構)
  • Hira Ichimonji-no-Kamae (平一文字之構)
  • Happo Gakure-no-Kamae (八方隠之構)
  • Tonso-no-Kamae (遁走之構)

The first step towards training your kamae is understanding how to get into the proper position so that you can get a feeling of how the body moves and how you can shift your weight from this position. Although today’s video is a very basic understanding of the concept, you cannot master the kamae, without understanding the basics.

.

Live Life Outside The Box – Connecting To Natural Energy | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training (Ninpo)

.
In studying the old ways of the samurai, we learn the samurai kokoro.  The first philosophy that is taught is: “Know Thyself”.  One cannot truly understand what this is, unless they truly live their own life freely, from all outside influence.

Training In REAL Ninja Combat Tactics | Ninjutsu Martial Arts Techniques (Ninpo) Taijutsu, Jujutsu

In this video, I explain why these ancient ninja combat tactics have to be preserved to the present day.  In a world full of greed, hate, prejudice and violence, I am glad to say we are one of the few schools that still do teach, train and preserve the TRUE ancient ways of the ninja.
.
Taijutsu and swinging around some stick – and learning some 15th century story is not going to save your ass against extreme Violence… That is a fact. The only thing that is going to protect you is skills. You either have these skills or you don’t.

What Does “Anshu” Mean? & What Is A Warrior Name In Japanese Koryu Martial Arts? | Ninjutsu, Ninpo

Many times people ask me why I took the title “Anshu” from Stephen K. Hayes. The facts are; I didn’t. There are many different kanji, all with many different meanings and interpretations.  The kanji that An-shu Stephen K. Hayes uses as a title for his martial arts teachings is not the same kanji for the warrior name “Anshu” that was giving to me from my master.
.
Stephen K. Hayes:
“Title” = An-shu means: Custodian of the Spiritual Inn / Enlightened One
.
Christa Jacobson:
“Warrior Name” = Anshu (暗主) means: Dark Master
.
The reality is, many practitioners who study the ancient arts cannot read or write Japanese, so the come up with their own opinions and post incorrect information on the internet.  Hopefully this will clear up the meaning of the “title” of Stephen K Hayes (An-shu) and the warrior name giving to me by my master (Anshu).

Kunoichi (くノ一) The Woman Ninja | Ninjutsu Training Techniques (Ninpo) | Woman’s Self-Defense

In this video, I discuss the Kunoichi (くノ一). A kunoichi is a woman practitioner of ninjutsu (ninpo). During the feudal period of Japan, ninja were used as assassins, spies, scouts and messengers. The training of the kunoichi differed slightly from the training given to male ninja, although they had a common core of martial arts training, such as taijutsu, kenjutsu, and ninjutsu. Kunoichi training tended to prioritize traditional female skills.
.
The eighth volume of the Bansenshukai written in 1676 by Fujibayashi Yasutake, describes the art of Kunoichi-no-jutsu (くノ一の術, Ninjutsu of female ninja). This can be translated as “a technique to use a female” and was employed for infiltration purposes. The Bansenshukai compiles the knowledge of various ninja clans from the Iga and Koka regions dedicated to the formation and understanding of ninjutsu. According to this document, the main function of the Kunoichi was espionage, finding functions in enemy residence, to gather knowledge, gain trust and or listen to conversations.
.
The Bansenshukai (萬川集海) translates as “All Rivers Merge into the Sea”, meaning that the Bansenshukai is the ultimate collection of all Iga & Koka Ninjutsu and is regarded by scholars as the Bible of Ninjutsu.

Understanding the Historical Timeline of the Ninja | Ninjutsu History, Tradition & Training

In this video I (Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson) explain the importance of understanding the historical timeline of the ninja.  This is because as the era changed, so did the techniques and reasons why the ninja did what they did.  In the modern age, we are left with all of these techniques to study, understand and practice.  Many think that “all” of the techniques are from the Sengoku Jidai, the age of the warring states.  This is not true.  In fact, if you understand the time periods, you would then understand what techniques came from what era, the context of the techniques and why the art of ninjutsu transformed from the Sengoku Jidai, through the Edo Period and into the Meiji Period.

Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson: My Extreme Approach To Ninjutsu Training | Ninja Martial Arts (Ninpo)

In this video I (Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson) explain why my approach towards ninjutsu training and physical conditioning is so extreme. We live in a world where violence, aggression, prejudice and hate is on the rise.  The only way to excel and perform in a violent extreme situation is to be highly skilled in violence, through extreme training.

How To Use Juji Shuriken In Combat: Shurikenjutsu Training Techniques | Ninja, Ninjutsu, Ninpo

In this video tutorial I teach the basic understanding of how to use the juji shuriken in combat.  This video is not how to throw the shuriken; this video is much deeper than that.  In this video I teach how and when to use the shuriken in combat.
.
I would like to add that every school has their own particular ways of throwing the shuriken. I teach that shurikenjutsu, along with all projectile weapons, is based on hitting the target and “form” is not as important.  Yes, there is “form” and “kamae”, but in the end, if you are not hitting the target, it does not matter how good your kamae is, it is wrong.
.
Here at the Budo Ryu Kai, we teach to throw all types of shuriken both right and left.  We also teach how to throw stepping into the throw as well as not stepping into the throw.  We also teach how to throw moving forwards, backwards and sideways, or any other method of combative movement that you can think of.

How To Properly Apply Henka To Your Martial Arts Training | Ninjutsu, Ninpo, Bujutsu, Budo

In this video I discuss the method of how we utilize “henka” in our martial arts training at the Budo Ryu Kai.

Henka (変化) means: change; variation; alteration; mutation; transition; transformation; transfiguration; metamorphosis.
.
In this video I detail the image of a tree and how the seed represents the kata.  If you train correctly and nurture good skills, you will grow a solid foundation and have strong roots.  From that, the tree will grow branches, limbs and leaves.  This is the henka.  Just as the branches and limbs are the variations and changes from the seed/root, the henka are the variations / changes from the kata. From here, you get the fruit.  This is the useable materials for survival and nourishment.  This is where we derive the goshinjutsu (reality based self defense) from the variation to help with our martial arts self defense training.

Shurikenjutsu Kihon | Shuriken Basic Training Techniques | Ninja Martial Arts: Ninjutsu, Ninpo

In this video “Shurikenjutsu Kihon”, I go over the basic knowledge and introduction of the use, the training and techniques of the shuriken. I also discuss how the ninja would have used this particular “kakushi buki (hidden weapon) on covert stealth missions, such as night raids. I also teach its historical position within the koryu; as this “weapon”, is more historically attached to samurai bujutsu, than it is to historical ninjutsu.
.
Shurikenjutsu (手裏剣術) is a general term describing the traditional Japanese martial arts of throwing shuriken, which are small, hand-held weapons/blades used primarily by the Samurai in feudal Japan, such as metal spikes bō shuriken, circular plates of metal known as hira shuriken, and knives (tantō).
.
Shurikenjutsu was usually taught among the sogo-bugei, or comprehensive martial arts systems of Japan, as a supplemental art to those more commonly practiced such as kenjutsu, iaijutsu, sojutsu, bōjutsu, etc… and is much less prevalent today than it was in the feudal era.
.

Authentic Historical Ninjutsu & Classical Koryu Bujutsu Skills | Ninpo & Budo Training Demo

In this video I thought I would share with you a demonstration (demo) on authentic historical ninjutsu and classical koryu samurai bujutsu skills! I used the footage from our taikai events over the last 10 years, to create this fun demo for all of you!

There are so many “ninpo schools” that teach taijutsu and call it ninjutsu.  Ninjutsu is not taijutsu.  Ninjutsu is ninjutsu.  Here at the Budo Ryu Kai, we pride ourselves on the study and training of authentic ninjutsu and classical samurai bujutsu!

One of the reasons some of the larger “ninpo organizations” and members of these organizations like to belittle and trash me and my organization (Budo Ryu Kai), is simply because they know they are NOT teaching real historical ninjutsu. It is easier for the “established businesses/organizations” and “online haters and trolls” to keep doing what they are doing, even though they know they are wrong.  Regardless of how many attack me, the truth is the truth and if you are a student of the Budo Ryu Kai, studying Budo Ryu Ninjutsu, than you are without a doubt, 100%, studying true ninjutsu, bujutsu and kobujutsu.

This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).
