The shinobi is known to have had a longer sageo (下緒; cord) on their Tou (刀;blade) to help them on shinobi missions. In the Tomo-ryu there are seven methods called: “Nana-sageo-jutsu” (下げ緒七術), and are commonly called the seven cord arts of the ninja.
This image illustrates the use of the sageo to help aid in constructing shelter while out in the wilderness traveling on missions.

(Upper right) This is the use of the sageo to tie off any wounds that the ninja may absorb within battle.
(Bottom Left) This is the use of the ninja-tou as a climbing tool and using the longer sageo rope to pull the blade back up to the ninja.
